Raised in a brothel, then wrested from the only life she knew by her father, so they could join the circus, Edith Piaf spent her teen years on the streets. She is finally "rescued" by a crime figure who gives her career a start. Always frail, sickly, malnourished, and wildly temperamental, she was often on drugs or alcohol and was always in search of true love. Middleweight boxer, Marcel Cerdan, captures her heart and gives her something to live for, besides her music--at least for a while.

Story of Edith Piaf a stylized portrayal of her child hood, then she became quite the troll later in life. But, she had a very good voice and a terrific vocal style. The movie was boring however. Question: Why is Gerard Depardieu in every French movie marketed to the west? He's great but every movie?

A very tragic story but a well made film. Marion Cotillard's performance is exemplary, most certainly Oscar worthy!

Must See – La Vie en Rose (2007) 140 min. The official name of this film is “La Mome”. The main title suggests the translation to be "looking at life through rose colored glasses". Marion Cotillard became Edith Piaf (translated as “the Little Sparrow” and coined by Piaf’s publicist. This is an excellent portrayal of a tragic figure, one for whom you cannot feel empathetic towards. The incredible French singer had her faults but the director brings to light all her troubles through song and pacing. The film is chronologically all over the place for the simple reason of a) representing her erratic life and b) like music, life’s memories are timeless. It’s the passion in the songs that really provide the viewer and listener where her heart is; mostly in turmoil. This is ironic because one of her producers insisted that she never injected any emotion in her singing – how wrong he was. The film is a little long but never dull. Much deserved winner of the 2008 Oscars for Best Actress and Make-Up. It also garnered a nomination for Costume Design.
