Eff is an unlucky thirteenth child - her twin brother, Lan, is a powerful seventh son of a seventh son. And yet, Eff is the one who saved the day for the settlements west of the Great Barrier. Her unique ways of doing magic and seeing the world, and her fascination with the magical creatures and land in the Great Plains push Eff to work toward joining an expedition heading west. But things are changing on the frontier. There are new professors of magic for Eff and Lan to learn to work with. There's tension between William and his father. And there are new threats on the frontier and at home. To help, Eff must travel beyond the Barrier, and come to terms with her magical abilities -- and those of her brother, to stop the newest threat encroaching on the settlers.

The first book was interesting. This was less so, Im glad Im done w/it so I can move onto something I'll enjoy more! Just wasn't my thing for some reason. Sadly, there is room for a following book, I doubt I'll read it if there is another.

Eff is the the thirteenth child born to her family. Folklore will tell you that she is cursed, doomed to bring bad luck to all around her. Her twin-brother Lan, is the seventh son of a seventh son, which means he is more powerful and destined to do great things. Yet it was Eff who saved the settlements from the mirror bugs, so Eff is starting to think that maybe all that stuff about her been cursed is poppycock. Lan has gone back East to study at a prestigious college and is pressuring Eff to follow him. Eff is not so sure about Lan's ideas. Instead she gets a job in the local college menagerie helping to care for the animals. But when an expedition is planned to document the impact of the mirror bugs beyond the Great Barrier, Eff gets assigned to help and finds herself involved in something far more shocking and dangerous than the mirror bugs. A solid second book in her Frontier Magic series. I can not believe we have to wait two years for the next instalment.
