Dublin murder mystery short on story-line but such a nuanced narrative! If author added more depth to story it would have been a greater success.

A rather soul-searching examination of characters with a unique definition of "family". The narrative displays various relationships of love gained, love lost, love between parent and child or husband and brother- parent as donor only, brother who parents, and so on. The author has an insightful take on the real aspects of love and relationships.A rather soul-searching examination of characters with a unique definition of "family". A softer voiced Sufjan Stevens still comes up with meaningful, contemplative lyrics, which were included. Can't help but prefer the Cat Steven's from "Peace Train" days.

In Miller's novel, the concept of prima facie takes center stage, serving as a metaphor for the flaws within the legal system, particularly concerning cases of sexual assault. The narrative follows a rising barrister, hailing from a common background, who finds herself entangled in her own case that challenges the inadequacies of the traditional legal approach to rape. She used to defend rapists with the traditional legal approach. However, her perspective is shaken when she becomes the victim herself, assaulted by a colleague whom she had previously dated and engaged in consensual relations with. Miller's novel is not only a compelling work of fiction but also a thought-provoking commentary on the state of justice for rape victims in contemporary society. In Miller's novel, the concept of prima facie takes center stage, serving as a metaphor for the flaws within the legal system, particularly concerning cases of sexual assault. Had to read a Pacific Northwest crime novel. Author Black includes the usual incredients - murder, suspicion, family disfunction, drugs along with familiar Seattle settings. Although it's second in a series it stands on it's own.

In her insightful exploration of the human brain, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, renowned for her Ted Talk "My Stroke of Insight," examines the four primary areas that shape our behavior. By delving into these regions, she offers a pathway to harmonize our thoughts and actions. Taylor identifies two dominant left-brain regions: one focused on logic and tasks, the other influenced by conditioning. Similarly, the right brain encompasses a zone associated with enjoyment and adventure, alongside a deeper connection to the universe or spirituality. Drawing from both scientific expertise and her personal stroke experience, Taylor advocates for achieving equilibrium through "brain huddles," where individuals contemplate the interplay of these areas and strive for balance. This approach, blending scientific rigor with esoteric understanding, underscores Taylor's unique perspective and offers readers a holistic framework for living in harmony with their cognitive processes. In her insightful exploration of the human brain, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, renowned for her Ted Talk "My Stroke of Insight," examines the four primary areas that shape our behavior. Many non-fiction books are researched to the max. This one is no exception. Chayka paints a picture of our present complex world of digital algorithms and how it affects culture, lifestyle, relationships, business, etc. How we connect to art, one another, and our environment has changed. We are faced with being "normal" according to algorithms and go viral or die. Many strive to fit the mold or are forced to conform to an identity. I guess there is reason one is called "an influencer". Highly recommend. Many non-fiction books are researched to the max. This one is no exception. Adelaide brings her baggage into her relationships. She gets serious with Rory who may or may not be the one. Wheeler examines what we carry with us into relationships, influence from past family history, and desire to be happy. There's something poetic about a movie that is carried on feelings expressed through one couple over a period of time. It's not beautifully cinematic or having a large cast with ups and downs of action. It was a pleasant deep and changing connection between two characters. What a difference in Teo Yoo's performance in Past Lives and in Love to Hate You. Part vindication of social media double and part in depth examination of the duality that exists in our present mirror world, Naomi Klein addresses what has led us to living more in our shadow self. I like many of her expressions that describe how we have accommodated the doppelganger - "digital doppelganger" for those mirrors of self that we want to show to the world, "disaster capitalism", "colonial genocide" to examine history, "perfection olympics" for parents who wish their kids to be a reflection of their ideals.

If you liked Jiles "News of the World" I think you'll like "Chenneville". The premise is simple - Man wakes up from unconsciousness from a wound in Civil War to find his sister, husband, and child have been brutally murdered. Chenneville traipses throughout the land in search of the perpetrator. I don't typically pick up a book of this nature but Jiles writes in a lyrical narrative that captures the characters, the time, and place. It's just long enough or I may start skimming. In an engaging style, Follett once again furthers his story in time. This setting is late 1700's to early 1800's at a time when manufacturing ways and leadership was changing and in this case the textile industry. At the same time Bonaparte was doing his thing so characters intersect between the fight for freedom of country and freedom of worker's rights. As usual there are many characters to keep track of over time but Follett has a way of making it easy. I was less interested in this particular time period despite his well chronicled history. However, it took little effort to immerse and enjoy. In an engaging style, Follett once again furthers his story in time. McDermott tells a tale that took place during the US involvement in the Vietnam war. She mentions the political climate but the story itself centers around several women who accompanied their military husbands overseas. The strong points are that the author writes in a way that puts us right there at the time. Her description of the times is spot on - a time when women's bathing caps were petalled and looked like flowers... At times, it took effort to move from past to present but overall the writing and it's technique drew me in.McDermott tells a tale that took place during the US involvement in the Vietnam war. Kishimi explores Alderian philosophy through a tete a tete between an adult philosopher and and an idealistic young man. Alderian philosophy borrows from Greek philosophers Socrates and Plato. We exist only in the here and now and in our interpersonal relationships and in contribution to others. I grasp some concepts like instead of complimenting one (kids, husband) for a job well done, it's appropriate to respond with "______looks good" instead of "good job". It fosters individuality and sense of self. "Life has no meaning. We assign meaning." "We only become an individual in the presence of other people". I love that author says it takes 1/2 one's life to fully grasp the concepts. That leaves me in the ground before it would make better sense. (why just women? and bears don't go around murdering.). And Luke met his girlfriend, tall and thin, of course, after Jack the dog saved her from the mass murderer, the Cascade Killer. Aw come on.
