Plenty of first love-films and now this PG docudrama between first-friends when, around 1980, two sixth graders were literally dropped from their native homelands to NYC where they experienced both joys of freedom and unique experience as first-generation Americans. (For all ages: prejudice, poverty, shame, and the power of friendship.)

If you like this, suggest David Kinsella's 2016 The Wall.

***Very good multilingual soundtrack. "Foreign Letters," Hagan Ha'biladi (The Secret Garden,) Di Krenitse (The Wall,) Di Golden Pave (The Golden Peacock,) and Sipur Intimi (An Intimate Story.)

***If you LOL at how the two young immigrants see in America, don't miss the 16:50 minutes short film "A Summer Rain -- An 11-year-old immigrant girl from Israel misses her best friend. A Vietnamese refugee next door shares in her experience."

LOVED this movie, very well made.
The main-theme song by Chava Alberstein is now part of my music collection.
I love it when movies give back so much culture.

This movie was very nostalgic as this reminded me of my youth when I was the same age as Ellie and Thuy. I am Mexican and my friend was Italian, we were both born in USA. We were very close friends for about a couple of years, until I starting talking and playing with another girl and my close Italian friend called me a two-timer and she went her own way. She and her family moved to a different part of the city. I never got a chance to explain to her, "how important our friendship was". I'm married and have a family and I often think about her and our friendship we had. I wish that our friendship continued as in this movie "Foreign Letters". Foreign Letters, is a beautiful story.

"Foreign Letters" is such a wonderful movie because the child actresses are outstanding. A wonderful true story that shows the strength of friendships. Really a movie not to be missed!

This movie brought tears to my eyes in remembrance of young friendship. Ellie learns the hard way that hurting someone you love deeply only hurts yourself. She navigates this immature move in a heartfelt and intelligent way - something which can be harder for us adults to do when we wrong someone.

a story of the friendship of two immigrant girls in the US made by the woman who is represented as Ellie. lovely special feature of a reunion of the 2 adult women, 30 years after the time of the film. touching and real.

A nice story about two immigrant children in America, one from Israel, the other from Vietnam. Because they are cultural outsiders in their mainstream American school, they form a friendship that eventually leads to support of one another. Based on a true story where the real characters did not meet after grade school for 30 years and finally met again to help make this movie.

Dreams
A Report by Ellie Ti
6th Grade. Mrs. Carsi.
Science Class

Dreams are thiughts you are thinkigwhile you sleep. The brain never stops thinking, even during the night. Most of the parts of the brain are worjking all the time.

Every dream takes about five minutes, and you have about five dreams every night. There is no night without at least five dreams. Ypou remeber them only if you wake inthe middle of one of the m.

Most of the time, people dream what they wish and abowt eople they like.

(On screen lyrics of theme song in "Videos.")

How do you pronounce your name
In your country?
How is it spelled here?
Oh how strange
What does it mean?
Oh how beautiful
I never thought this could be a man's name
Can you write it down for me
In your language?
Oh how beautiful
I love foreign letters
They are like drawings
They are like secret signs
From magic places
From different worlds
I don't know what they mean
I hope they mean well
I hope they're not against me
I don't know what they mean
I hope they are friendly
I hope they don't plan to hurt me
How do you say "laugh"
In your language?
Can you write it down for me?
Oh how beautiful
Can you say it one more time?
Can I try too?
How do you say "thank you"?

Thuy is teaching me about the holidays in America. They celebrated Purim in October and they call it "Halloween." In November they have a holiday where they thank the Indians. I don't know why. There are no Indians here. She didn't know either. In December they have another holiday. I can't remember what it's called. She told me that people put a tree inside their house. I'm sure that most people don't do that. But if I see a tree inside somebody's house I'll tell you. ...

Finally I figured out that in the United States you can't say you're Jewish. So what do Jews do? They hint at it. "I have a cousin in Israel." That's code for "I'm Jewish."
-Listen, here they respect your privacy. Nobody here meddles in your business.
Truth is, it's ok to say I'm "Jewish." But you can't say "Jew." But "Jewish" is acceptable.

I can sit here?
-It's a free country.
===
When are you returning to Israel? Escape is never the solution.
-What escape are you talking about?! I'm not sending my husband to Lebanon.
So what are we supposed to do? Sit around and not do anything? Not defend ourselves?
-Dad, you voted for this Begin of yours. You can thank him for us being here.
===
Can we have one evening without politics?

What is PSAT?
-It's a practice SAT. The SAT is a test and if you do good, you go to a college that you want, or a good one.
College is when you're an adult.
-I take it in the eighth grade, only if you're an honor student.
But you're in sixth grade.
-But if I start studying now, I'll get a high score on the SAT.
That's stupid.
-I don't care.

... when you are best friend with someone, nobody can bring that to an end.
