A portrait of writer Sholem Aleichem, whose stories about Tevye the milkman became the basis of the Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof. Aleichem (1859-1916) was a rebellious wordsmith who created a new genre of literature and used his remarkable humor to encapsulate the realities of the Eastern European Jewish world in the late nineteenth century. Using a rich collection of archival footage, the film recreates a time in czarist Russia when Jews were second-class citizens and frequent scapegoats in times of social and political unrest.

Before I watched this documentary, I had no idea about the world of Sholem Aleichem. I really liked Fiddler on the Roof, but had no idea that it was based on stories were written long ago. This man had an interesting life of ups and downs and is one of those unique characters that is driven and passionate about his work. No only was his life intersting, but also this documentary impelled me to add Sholem Aleichem's work to my "To Read" list.

I asked the catalog staff to list in the Bibliographic description if the film is in Yiddish (it comes up in a Bib. subject search for Yiddish) and if so if it's sub-titled in English for English speaking audiences; and if it's in English if it has closed-captions for the hearing impaired (11-11-13)
