"The Circle is the exhilarating new novel from Dave Eggers, best-selling author of A Hologram for the King, a finalist for the National Book Award. When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world's most powerful internet company, she feels she's been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users' personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company's modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO. Mae can't believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world--even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one woman's ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge"--

An interesting story about privacy, dignity, and exposure in the age of social media. Excellent reader on the audio.

A great read for anyone who is a bit leery(or not at all concerned!) about the growth of social media!!

Fortunately, this could never happen in real life.

A satire without irony. The book is readable but as the plot accelerates it blows up into hyperbole which left me utterly cold. It lacks any likeable characters too which ultimately led me to put it down and turn to Wikipedia to see if the book would end up where I expected it was headed. Pretty much it did.

Paparazzi gone haywire on the average Joe. This is a what not to do for social networking. I was disappointed in Mae ultimate choices at the conclusion of the novel. I thought she would have gone a different, more sensible route.

From the mixed reviews I've seen of this book I was bracing myself for a let down, but was not disappointed! The story reminds me of 1984, of course, but instead of focusing on society after the abolishment of privacy, it shows the steps leading up to complete digital surveillance. The protagonist is on the inside of The Circle, the company that is slowly taking over the flow of information worldwide. Mae's start at the company is a bit rocky as she tries to fit in, but eventually she becomes one of its most influential employees. Her naivete is frustrating at times (I was always chastising her in my head), however it's a good representation of how people - especially the younger generation - can be easily swept away on the tide of technology, for good or for ill. The ending was abrupt in my opinion, and some scenes that I feel should have been elaborated on or made more exciting or central to the plot were skimmed over or omitted altogether. In general, though, it was a good and worthwhile read. The audiobook version is superbly narrated, and even though a male voice actor is portraying a female protagonist it didn't bother me at all.

This novel takes George Orwell's 1984 into today's 21st century. This interesting, well written story holds the reader's interest throughout. 8 of 10 stars
