The Summer of Letting Go was sad, but also irritating at times. Francesca had WAY too much self-pity, and it got in the way of the story sometimes. The ending was predictable, and anti-climatic. Overall an okay book, but I probably wouldn't want to read it again.

I loved this book. It wasn't your typical YA novel and I loved it. It made me think while I was reading it. I would recommend this to anyone.

"The Summer of Letting Go" is a sweet story about a girl who spends the summer coming to terms with her role in a tragic accident that took her baby brother's life four years ago. On top of resolving her feelings about this accident, Francesca ("Frankie" or "Beans") deals with a crush on her best friend's boyfriend, a babysitting job for a little boy who bears an uncanny resemblance to her brother, and the possibility that her father may be having an affair.

The writing was good but a little choppy. Occasionally the author jumps back in time, and there was no indication that she was doing this, so I was confused for a paragraph or two until I figured it out. I was reading this on the Kindle, so I'm not sure if there's a change in formatting in the edited hard copy that would signify this shift. Also, the ending wraps up just a little too neatly--practically with a bow on top. However, I certainly think this book has an audience, especially with realistic fiction making a big comeback. The happy ending may be just what some readers are looking for.
