A brilliant, methodical look at the question "What makes a family?" The main character in this film is an architect who discovers one day that the boy he and his wife have been raising for the past six years is not their biological child. Due to a hospital error, their newborn had been swapped shortly after childbirth with the son of another family. The director does a good job underscoring the difficult choice faced by both families involved. Should they exchange sons to regain their biological children, or remain with the children they've spent years loving? The beautiful screenplay is reminiscent of Shoplifters, another film by the same director. If you enjoy emotionally-nuanced family dramas, this film is a must-see.

Parent’s worst nightmare beautifully and emotionally told by talented Hirokazu Koreeda!

An all-time favorite for me. I watched this with my sister and at every key plot turn, my sister would predict a Hollywood-esque cliche. She failed every single time. This is a movie that isn't about twists and surprises. It's about how two families, one in particular, deal with a seemingly impossible situation. The solution, it turns out, is one of the simplest, most elegant and humane ones I've seen in a movie dealing with such a high concept plot. I'm so pleased our library system has this available for loan. It's one of Koreeda's best.

A very unique family story about two Japanese families who got their sons exchanged at birth but only to find out about it 6 years later and how they deal with it....Full of charisma and innocence pulling us through a emotional journey from start to end. This film will make you both laugh and cry.

This movie gives pause for thought. Having to make the decision between the son you've raised for six years and the son you learn is biologically yours is any parent's nightmare. I have considered the painful decision for the first time ever, and it rips my heart apart. What would you do?

Such an amazing and difficult film about two children switched at birth and how two families are forced to respond to the mistake. Really loved the story and raw the story was.

To father a child, that's easy. To be a daddy, man that's exosting and time sonsuming. I like this movie.

Tearful yet heart-warming Japanese cinematic perfection.

What at first I thought would be a sterile movie, slow going, turned into a thought provoking look at how people bring their own history to a situation flung onto them, and turn it into anything.
I'm still thinking about it days later.

like father like son, until the son isn't of the father.

is it nature or nurture that calls the relationships into question?

another great film by Hirokazu

please spare us from a Spielberg remake.
