In this unflinchingly honest and refreshingly unsentimental coming-of-age story, fourteen-year-old Lila spends a languid South Brooklyn summer playing third wheel to her promiscuous friend Chiara and Chiara's boyfriend Patrick. Eager for her own sexual awakening, Lila gamely decides to pursue the older, thuggish Sammy, rumored to sleep with anyone. But as Lila's overt advances unmask her inexperience and quiet desperation, she's quickly pushed into frightening and unwelcome new territory.

This film has received some very +ve comments from film critics, but I still find the directing and acting a tad amateurish. Too many unnecessary close-up shots, and poor character development, put this film in the 'below-par' category. I hope first-time director Eliza Hittman can become more mature in her future work and engage in topics other than adolescent lust and love.

This was truly uncomfortable to watch. More background is needed to have set the story - there are many scenes that are unnecessary, and the acting could be much better. it was difficult to understand what Lila, the main character, was thinking.

On further thought, it is interesting to see Lila caught between the innocence of childhood (represented by her male friend) to the sexuality of adulthood (represented by Chiara).
