As a five-year-old boy, William was sentenced to execution and led to the gallows, yet against all odds rose through the ranks-- serving at the right hand of five English monarchs-- to become a celebrated tournament champion, a baron and politician and, ultimately, regent of the realm. Marshal befriended the great figures of his day, from Richard the Lionheart and Eleanor of Aquitaine to the infamous King John, and helped to negotiate the terms of Magna Carta. By the age of seventy he was the most powerful man in England, yet he was forced to fight in the front line of one final battle, striving to save the kingdom from French invasion in 1217.

I've been reading the Mistress of the Art of Death series, so really enjoyed learning the details of the history of the era.

What an incredible life! One hair-raising escape from certain death after another. Not history light. Rather a very well-written biography. Warrior and king's counselor, Marshal lived to be praised as the model of the chivalrous knight by his contemporaries.

I can't even explain how much I loved this book. Such an excellent biography of a man who deserves to be remembered.

William Marshal was a remarkable man in a remarkable time. From his near-death experience at age five at the hand of King Stephen, to leading his final charge at the age of 70 at Lincoln, Marshal's life is truly extraordinary. And unlike many of his contemporaries, he was afforded what they were not - the chance to withdraw from court life and spend his final days at home in the comfort of his own bed, his family beside him.
