The story of Jeremy Thorpe's rapid rise and spectacular fall from grace is one of the most remarkable in British politics. Leader of the Liberal Party in 1967 at the age of 37, he seemed destined for great things, but a time-bomb was already ticking.

Jeremy Thorp's wanton and indiscrete sexual escapades (at a time when homosexuality was still illegal) were bound to bring him down sooner or later. By the late 1960's, following the Wolfenden report, homosexuality became legal but not yet socially acceptable - especially for politicians or any persons required to sign the Official Secrets Act. Was Thorpe's significant other a wife or just a "beard"? It was ironic that Thorpe dragged the Liberals down with him so soon after his party had enjoyed its best election result since 1916. David Lloyd George must have turned in his grave.

A complex blend of late-20th century British politics, incisive character analysis and scandal. Brilliant.
