A modern twist on several of the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel, all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

The story was quite dark and morbid, but there were some absolutely hilarious moments in the movie that I think made up for it. The songs were great too; my favourites were Agony (LOL!) and Your Fault. The cast was excellent, the plot was interesting and I loved the mix-up of fairy tales (it was the original Grimm (and kind of grim) fairy tales and not the Disney versions, which was surprising but awesome!) It was definitely worth the watch!

The singing and acting were excellent, but this film was confusing and dragged at parts. While watching I felt that it had a rather dark and melancholy feel.

It's disappointing that so many comments give such glowing reviews on such a horrible excuse of a film adaptation of what originally was a brilliant, funny, engaging Broadway musical. This movie is sadly devoid of the cleverness, pitch perfect humor, timing, and overall power performances of the original Broadway cast stage recording. The only thing that I can praise in this version is the scene in which Agony was performed, which was hilarious and surprisingly thoughtful, considering how ho-hum the rest of the movie was. But do yourself a favor and watch the original Broadway cast stage recording DVD with the incomparable Bernadette Peters, Chip Zien, and Joanna Gleason instead of this third rate adaptation. Or at least watch it first so you can know how fantastic this musical once was and was always meant to be.

It's fun, and for a film version of a stage show it does an admirable job. And really, it's worth your time just for "Agony" performed on that waterfall.

Obviously it's not a masterpiece like the original, but this is a fun and entertaining adaptation with several killer performances.

No rating because I didn't finish this film, but I should say my piece--

When adapting a stage play or musical to film, things are bound to change (blocking, pacing, etc.), but there where changes made to elements of the story I consider to be important--the dual casting of roles (Cinderella's Prince w/ the Wolf; Cinderella's Mother w/ the Giant's Wife; the Mysterious Man w/ the Narrator), the importance of the Mysterious Man, the existence of the Narrator and the implications that entail with him, etc.

I also had the original Broadway recording to compare this to, which does not help the case of the film adaptation. I prefer the stage productions over the film on this one.

I loved this movie! I'd not seen the stage production, so this was my first time seeing it. What an amazing work of imagination, mashing up fairy tales in a way that creates a whole new story that transcends all the parts. It was hilarious at times, too. Johnny Depp makes for a perfect Wolf, by the way. The rest of the cast really impressed me -- Meryl Streep, of course, can do anything, I swear. But James Corden? I didn't know he could act and sing as well as he does in this movie -- he's marvelous. The editing in this movie is extraordinary and stunning, also, especially in the first 16 minutes. I've already ordered my own copy for my DVD library!

Fair to midland.

A movie that could sell on its cast alone, this modern musical mash-up of classic fairytales is quirky, suspenseful and full of music.

Both Princes: AGONYYYYYY!!!

Baker's Wife: [speaking to Cinderella] "I need that shoe to have a child."

Baker's wife: That's what woods are for: For those moments in the woods...Oh, if life were made of moments, Even now and then a bad one--! But if life were only moments, then you'd never know you had one. First a witch, then a child, then a Prince, then a moment--Who can live in the woods? And to get what you wish, only just for a moment--These are dangerous woods..Let the moment go..Don't forget it for a moment, though. Just remembering you had an 'and,' when you're back to 'or,'
Makes the 'or' mean more than is did before. Now I understand--And it's time to leave the woods.

Got a chuckle on this exchange:

Prince: My love, what is it?
Cinderella: Maybe I'm not your only love.
Prince: I love you! Truly, I do.
Cinderella: If you love me, why did you stray?
Prince: Uh...I thought that if you were mine, I would never wish for more.
Cinderella: If this is how you behave as a prince, what kind of king will you be?
Prince: I was raised to be charming, not sincere.
...
Prince: I shall always love the maiden who ran away.
Cinderella: And I the faraway prince.
