"From the internationally acclaimed author of the Harry Hole novels--a new, electrifying stand-alone thriller set in Oslo in the 1970s: the story of an unusually complicated contract killer--the perfectly sympathetic antihero--that is, as well, an edgy, almost lyrical meditation on death and love. This is the story of Olav: an extremely talented "fixer" whose unexpected capacity for love is as far-reaching as his talent for murder. He works for Oslo's crime kingpin, "fixing" anyone who causes him trouble. But it's becoming clear to Olav that the more you know about your boss's business, the more your boss might want you fixed yourself, especially if you've fallen in love with his wife..."--Provided by publisher.

I wanted to like this one so bad, but it didn't happen. Nesbo is good, but not great in my humble opinion

A quick read from a killer's perspective. Surprisingly unlike Jo Nesbo's other novels.

Olav is a soft-hearted criminal limited by his skills; the only thing he's got any talent for is "fixing" problems -- which means killing people at the request of his heroin kingpin boss. Unfortunately, he's been assigned to kill his boss' wife...and whether he does or doesn't, he's in the dangerous position of knowing rather too much about his employer. And that's before he falls in love with his target. Set in Oslo in the 1970s, this "jewel of a novel" (Booklist) was followed by Midnight Sun, which shares its setting.

Jo Nesbø spins a tale that is more (and less) than it appears. It is a much shorter story than I expected -- think novella rather than novel. Olav is a "fixer" for the Oslo underworld, but his most recent contract proves to be his most dangerous.

The anti-hero is a surprisingly complicated and relate-able character. He portrays himself simple-minded with little formal education, yet I found myself laughing at how much he knows through his eclectic reading (and how often he downplays it). His philosophical musings are a product of his troubled upbringing, brutal occupation and shaky confidence with interpersonal relationships.

The real beauty of the book, however, is the methodical building of a multi-layered story around how Olav sees the world and how he wishes to see the world. It becomes a struggle to distinguish between reality and fantasy in his carefully crafted world of deception, violence and love.

I had relatively low expectations for this book, because it lacks Harry Hole but I think it was my favorite Jo Nesbo story yet. It is a fast read but is ultimately satisfying in the way that it ends. It is elegant in its simplicity, honesty, and reality.

Quite different from Nesbo's other books, I found it lacking in depth and mystery. I also found it to be stilted. It reminded me of "Drive" by James Sallis. His books usually have depth, complexity and rich atmosphere and then with "Drive" he went down a similar terse and bleak road.

Not a Harry Hole mystery. Excellent translation by Neil Smith. One reads in the papers how drug dealers kill one another in gang wars. Nesbo develops a story around such facts, but provides his own answers to questions about Why, How, What Happened. After all, he is a storyteller who controls the storyline. The book is not long, just as the life of people caught up in drug warfare is not long.

I'm a bit ambivalent about this one. Short and to the point, lacking the complexity and depth of his Harry Hole series but an interesting storyline for all that.
