I haven't read much Holmes, but it read like I thought a Holmes book would read. And the story was pretty good. It's an experience of Mycroft's when he was 23, and Sherlock was still in school.

Yes, this is by *that* Kareem, plus co-author Anna Waterhouse. This was an EXCELLENT Holmes story! Even if it is the older Holmes brother. Much more humanity and far more diversity than one ever sees in a typical Holmes-ian spin-off. Highly recommend.

A total page-turner! The subject matter is a little dark, but the book is brilliantly written. I thoroughly enjoyed this story about Sherlock Holmes' older brother Mycroft.

A briskly-paced adventure that does a fine job of capturing the essence of a Holmes story, without directly trying to mimic its style. The co-author's pedigree as a screenwriter is evident in the way the tale plays out in a highly cinematic way.

This is a great book if you love Sherlock Holmes, historical fiction, books that address social ills, or if you just love great books. This is Holmes before Sherlock. Mycroft has ties to Trinidad through love and friendship that lead him down a path of no return. Not only is his own life in grave danger, but he discovers, and foils, a much bigger conspiracy that has its roots in history. Excellent reading.

I was expecting one of those novels written in epoch jargon and positively tedious to read but instead got a simple enough (with a word here and there of course) fantastically woven story. Holmes' mind is both incredibly fascinating and entertaining to peak into. I honestly wish I had more... (technically possible with the new comic coming out) This Mycroft is definitely a good interpretation of him as a 23 year old and I often (to my great amusement) pictured Mark Gatiss talking during the various dialog - especially chapter 46, god that definitely sounded like the BBC version though I suppose that version was also an interpretation and since both are pretty compatible, I suppose they have both done something right. Anyways. Great read, highlight of my summer reading so far.

It was okay. A little wordy in parts and the settings weren't always the greatest. The mystery itself felt at once ho-hum and then overly layered. I didn't like the overly presentist tone either. I probably wouldn't have attempted it without Kareem's name on the front.

If you've ever wonder about Sherlock Holmes' older Mycroft this book is your chance to get to know him! A very well written book that will keep your attention from beginning to end. If you like history, mystery, and the world of Sherlock Holmes this book is a must read!

I am a long time sherlock Holmes fan and this explains a lot about his older brother Mycroft.

"Well, of course it is new! Did you expect that I'd purchase it used?"

Revenge, he thought. Not ethically sound, perhaps. But sweet. (p. 322)

Catching a criminal in the act is nowhere near as important as closing the loopholes that allow one to act the criminal in the first instance, he longed to explain. That means affecting laws, it means bargaining in a way that there will always be checks and balances in place. At the moment, will it always seem right or even fair? Of course not-- (p. 309)

Redheads! he mused. They have presaged bad luck from start to finish. (p. 309)
