This book was a real disappointment. I chose to read it based on many rave reviews and 'best of' lists, however, I found the novel cliched and boring. The characters are more caricature than not, making it difficult to relate to them. The writing lacked clarity, the dialogue was trite and this comic novel? satire? or farce? left no lingering laughs or insights.

Across the street, Gene Runkle, another refugee from the Dirty Shame, waved an unlit sparkler in one hand, and a miniature American flag in the other, The people around him could tell this was not patriotism, just alcoholism. They moved away as fast as they could. p. 256
