The fifth “Tiffany Aching” Adventure and the last Discworld novel.

When Terry Pratchett died in 2015, the world lost one of the great modern writers. Pratchett’s combination of humor and serious social commentary was Jonathan Swift in the style of Monty Python. *The Shepherd’s Crown* is a good book for fans, although nowhere near his best work. He knew he was dying, of course, and both this and his previous novel *Raising Steam* feel like attempts to provide satisfactory endings for some of his characters.

Granny Weatherwax has died but not before appointing young woman Tiffany as the witch to take her place as, more or less, leading witch for the area. Now that the power of Granny Weatherwax is gone, a usurper in the Fairy world plans to invade the human world and overcome the humans. Tiffany must gather the knowledge and magical abilities of the few remaining witches to combat the new Fairy leader. Of course she also has the militant and headstrong support of the Feegles, 6 inches tall, blue, warlike, and bitter enemies of the fairies.

Pratchett’s plot may be a bit thin in this one, but his sense of character, humanity, and what “good neighbor” truly means never lets up.

First tried reading the book, but I really like the narrator so much, I waited until the audio version was available--and it was SO worth it. Tiffany's busier than normal in this last book of Pratchett's, what with a boy wanting to become a witch, Granny Weatherwax's departure and steading needing a keeper, overworked on the Chalk, and elves trying to take over the human world. Of course, with Feegals, other witches, a cat named 'You', and even some village men, Tiffany can't lose.

A wonderful final installation in Tiffany's story. I highly recommend the entire set about Tiffany and the Wee Free Men.

This really felt like Sir Terry's farewell piece. A bittersweet work for any Discworld fan.
