This was by far the best Sci-Fi show on TV in the 1970s. ABC went all out on the special effects this was years before computer animation. They burrowed all of George Lucas' tecniques with space dog fights just as good as in Star Wars. It was so good the pilot movie was released in theatres as a major motion picture; AFTER it had been on TV! and I think it did well in the box office. A movie that good deserved to be on the big screen!
I wasn't watching much news at the time since I had just started college; but I read later in one of Isaac Asimov's books that George Lucas sued ABC claiming it was a plagiarism of Star Wars but lost.
Lorne Greene, Dirk Benidict and the other actors did a great job. I remember reading in TV Guide that the robot dog actually had a chimpanzee inside!
There is a lot of Bible references in it. The 12 tribes that flea is straight out of Exodus.
It was always notable to me that they used army ranks instead of naval ranks subsituting Commander for General. I always thought this was to reduce the simularity to Star Trek.
If you've never seen this classic you won't be disappointed if you have seen it you know what I'm talking about.

This is where it all began. That being said, it's hard to tell how it ever went so far. I LOVED this show as a kid. Drew the ships. Drew the Cylons. Wanted to BE Starbuck (Dirk "Face Man" Benedict guys, not Katee Sackhoff...my future wife). But this pilot of the original series (and I'm sure the series as well) did not age like fine wine. Not even a short lived role by Rick Springfield could save this from being just plain bad. I DID get some enjoyment from seeing the roots of the reboot of the series (So good. If you have never seen it and like sci-fi it is a must see series) like the original Baltar and Starbuck saying "frak"! Borderline unwatchable if not for nostalgia.
