It centers on a family of beekeepers living in stark isolation in the Tuscan countryside. The dynamic of their overcrowded household is disrupted by the simultaneous arrival of a silently troubled teenage boy taken in as a farmhand and a reality TV show intent on showcasing the family. Both intrusions are of particular interest to the eldest daughter, who is struggling to find her footing in the world, and Rohrwacher conveys her adolescent sense of wonder and confusion with graceful naturalism.

I couldn't watch this. There are two options for subtitles, on and off. Fair enough, except that 'on' gives you subtitles for the hearing-impaired, i.e. every sound in the movie is explained - "chair shuffling", "man shouting", "whistling", even "plop" when someone uses the toilet. I tried every option to get plain old English subtitles, including changing soundtracks, without success. So unless your Italian is tip-top or you can put up with the annoying footnotes you're not likely to enjoy what is, going by critics' reviews, an interesting film.

This film won the Cannes Grand Prize of the Jury, which means that it was considered to be the second best film of the year. It reminds me of the Italian film of many decades ago, “La Terra Trema.” What I remember of that film was the minute to minute details of the hard working lives of the fishermen. This time it is beekeepers. In Hollywood films, the workers would have nicely pressed and perfectly clean clothes. Well in this film, the characters wear rags, are sweaty, have ragged hair, and act just like people that put in 12 hour work days, seven days a week.

This arthouse piece from Italy has hits and misses, but is in general an enjoyable film to watch. In Italian and German with subtitles.
