I really liked this book I was soo sucked into it!!!! It was so interesting and I agree that all the Chinese myths go together with the other books and characters!!!! I like how Grace Lin adds the Chinese myths because they are so interesting!

I've read it 5 times and I finally understand, so Amah is mini from where the mountain meets the moon and all the folk tales in the book are connected to the characters in the book.

While the Chinese myths are obviously the star of the show, I'd highlight this one as the best of Grace Lin's mythology series because of a well-rounded story arc.
An intriguing villain, a few hidden twists and an excellent zenith bring all the myths to an exciting conclusion-a very western literature thing to do, but I suppose we are a western audience.

Ahhhh! I think it's wonderful how both of the other books come into this one. :)

I have been a fan of Greek mythology, Japanese children's tales of samurai and Chinese fables. I was not disappointed by Grace Lin's "When the Sea Turned to Silver." It was a rainy day when I curled up with this book, my cat by my side. I enjoyed reading this book and actually finished it within one day.

While I enjoyed the stories, I was caught off guard by the ending (which I will NOT disclose) and that made the book all the more a surprise. The stories are delightful and there area a few colorful miniature drawings that are intriguing.

I would definitely recommend "When the Sea Turned to Silver" as light reading for a quiet or rainy afternoon.

A previous user suggested reading Grace Lin's books as good night stories and I agree.
The fairy-tale stories embedded within Lin's narrative make these very satisfying and soothing books to read and I enjoy their length and larger, spacious font.

I’ve read all three of Lin’s wonderful fantasy Chinese fairy tales—or are they more fables because they all have a moral. She writes an engaging story that even keeps an adult up reading to find out what happens to the characters in the books. In fact, Lin’s trilogy is sort of like reading Harry Potter. Although they are stand-alone books, once you reach the end, it’s worth reading over, now that you know what’s going to happen, you can think more about the stories told by the storyteller in When the Sea Turned to Silver and how they impact the story. The afterword by the author telling how she created them and the importance in certain Chinese numbers only adds to the appeal of the books.

When the Sea Turned to Silver is powerful, poetic and surprising. Grace Lin weaves Pinmei’s quest to rescue Amah, her grandmother, with Chinese folklore. Amah is a masterful storyteller and her tales become central to Pinmei’s search. Soon Pinmei finds her voice and tells the stories of her grandmother, which lead her into strange and magical places. Highly recommended! Would be a great read aloud. Ages 9-12.

I've love all the books in this series. I think they would make great bedtime stories for parents to read to their elementary age kids!

Another book of fabulous storytelling and intriguing characters from Grace Lin! The richly colored illustrations certainly enhance the text. Excellent choice as a family read-aloud. Grades 3-7
