For those who are tired of the bleak/dark/depressing films from Romania today,
this is a delightful antidote in rare luminous and true B&W stock.
Romanian riddle: lifeless out of life, life out of lifeless (hint: item in your fridge).
Other adages:
The rich look into their mirrors, the poor in their plates.
All our lives flow like a stream, it all passes like a dream.
While drunk do not give gifts or harm; if you want to give, give while sober.
Spot these and other words of wisdom (some unprintable XXX) when you watch!

We have two gendarmes hunting for the gypsy slave who took to his heels after taking to the bed of his noble owner's wife. Their search is the vehicle that introduces us to life in rural Rumania in 1835, a place where you don't want to live unless you are the local boyar. The dialogue between the old veteran and the young recruit runs like a comedic voice-over as the pair encounter one situation after another. I guess you need to know Rumanian to give this film a fair chance; but as it stands the subtitles are stilted and also bizarre when the translator tries to render the dialogue into colloquial English. It is historically true that the conditions of the peasantry in Rumania were the worst in Europe in the 19th century - and that is one thing you won't doubt after seeing this film! Be warned that a measure of patience is required to make it to the end.

stark, black & white, earthy, profane, cruel

several reviews for its 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes said that it was hilarious - I did not find this to be true, but it was platitudinous
