What a drag. Don't waste your time. I gave up on this book because so painfully slow, thought the movie might do better. Wooden acting, everything filmed in half light. I kept waiting for the actual story to begin and it was over. I can't believe this novel has been made into a movie, not once, but twice

Unsuccessful adaptation of the book of the same name by Sophia Coppola. There is something unfocused in the film which results good actors appearing to not know what it is they're supposed to be doing. I'm with those who prefer the original film, directed by Don Siegel and starring Geraldine Page ( great actress ) and Clint Eastwood.
It's too bad S. Coppola dropped the ball on this one, as it had the potential to be an interesting remake.

I don't think Sofia Coppola was successful in this remake- there was something somnolent and lackluster about the whole affair. I prefer the 1971 original directed by Don Seigel and starring Clint Eastwood and Geraldine Page.

A fox in a chicken coop but mother hen got the better of the fox... #MeToo territory here. Great cinematography by Philippe le Sourd (opening credit with Spanish moss covered oak trees), about the best of this film though the cast is quite watchable. Fans of die-hard Republican Clint might like to check out his more 'feminine' flicks: Edgar J. (Leo di Caprio), Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil (Kevin Spacey), Bridge of Madison County (w. Streep) and White Hunter Black Heart (true story behind the making of The African Queen).

I believe this movie has been done before. This version less frightening.

You must read the book before watching either film adaptation. I missed the dialogue of my favourite character, Marie, and I felt that the surgery scene was disappointing.

It took me a while to figure out what it was that is missing from this well made remake directed by Sophia Coppola and starring an array of talent, all of whom did a great job in this film. Sophia says she made this version from the females perspective - Honestly I couldn't tell the difference. However I did finally figure out what is missing, tension. There's no slow progressive build up. Everything just comes to one comunating end, rather abruptly and without that tension, for anyone whose never seen the original, you might be left with a lot of confusion. In telling the story from the women's perspective, you don't understand why the film progresses to such violence so quickly unless you understand the genetics of those days.

I am a fan of the "Clint Eastwood version" of this movie. I get that Sophia Coppola wanted to do this from the women's viewpoint, but the imperfections of characters seemed more balanced to me in the previous version. Beautiful to watch, though.

This beautifully shot film tells the story of a wounded Union soldier at the end of the Civil War who is rescued by the women of an isolated girl's school.

A total waste of time. This movie is too slow-paced that I almost fell asleep. The script and the brilliant cast including Nichole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning and Colin Farrell etc. has been totally wasted. 0 points out of 100.
