Not a bad movie, per se, but the original, with Clint Eastwood, has a much more finely honed finesse, revealing the story and characters with greater edge and/or subtlety, and a more threatening sense of danger and suspense.

Seems like people either loved this or hated it. I found it interesting and I kept thinking about it after I watched it. I thought it was beautifully filmed and I loved the setting. I didn't find it boring or slow like some reviewers. I felt it definitely showed the tension between the females vying for the attention of the injured Corporal, who they were caring for. And, it was dark & twisty. By the end, I was saying "what the . . . ?!". I haven't read the book or seen the original movie, so I didn't know what was going to happen. I recommend it, and now want to watch the original.

I haven't read the story but the movie was well done and the acting was good.

Considering that Nicole Kidman and Sofia Coppola were involved in this film, I'd expect better. That was about two hours of my life I'll never get back. Slow and very forgettable.

I read your comments and watched it anyways, stupid of me. Boring, boring, boring, whoa that turned grim didn't it. If it wasn't for other comments I'd have thought my TV was dying, too. Condolences to the next guy on the waiting list.

I watched for a while but quit because of the slow pace & difficulty seeing & hearing it. The females competing for the attention of the male/soldier, which was an important element in the original movie, was missing. Thus, little sexual tension & interest.

I have not seen the original so I cannot compare them, nor have I read the book. I thought this film caught the culture of the era and the jealousy elements very well. The understated elegance of the character portrayals was great. For those who say this film was boring, I would say you were not paying attention to the psychological components of the film. This type of movie is never going to be an action film, and the fact that they did not overdo the dramatic elements made it even better. The score was also great.

I still prefer the original which starred Clint Eastwood and Pamelyn Ferdin. But this was an excellent remake of a classic thriller.
It's the end of the Civil War and General Sherman has started his death march in which he burns the entire South, everything in his path. In Virginia a girls' school is still up and running as usual with six girls and two teachers. One of the students comes across a wounded Union soldier who deserted his regiment. They take him in against the better judgment of the headmistress. He immediately begins flirting with all the girls and the teachers. Eventually this all comes to a head when he's supposed to go to one teacher's room and ends up in a students' room instead. Loved it.

I waited months to borrow this movie, and I can now say that it was NOT worth the wait! Very disappointed, especially with the ridiculous and unnecessary ending
