I really enjoyed this book, especially since it takes place in the late 1990s. I was around the same age in 1997 as the character Pearl, so I think this helped draw me in a bit. I like books that give me a sense of nostalgia.

Since the bulk of the characters were teens, this seemed geared for young adults. It felt superficial, with a lot of chance occurrences that made it unbelievable and far fetched. I liked the relationships that developed between Mia and the Richardson kids but the remainder of the book was disappointing.

Another highly overrated 'new' young writer. A screaming bore. No pathos, no style. Don't quit your day job, Ng.

One makes an effort to try new authors but today's publishers are so easily pleased. Makes me wonder about the reject piles. If this is publishable, what can they be turning down?
