Peter: Why?
Annie: I was scared. I didn't feel like a mother. But she pressured me.
Peter: Then why did you have me?
Annie: It wasn't my fault! I tried to stop it.
Peter: How?
Annie: I tried to have a miscarriage.
Peter: How?
Annie: However I could. I did everything they told me not to do, but it didn't work. I'm happy it didn't work.

Hereditary was directed by Ari Aster and was released in 2018.
Hereditary is a horror film centered around a family mourning the loss of their grandmother, but soon they discover strange happenings going on around them.
Hereditary is one of those films where you need to watch it without knowing a thing, and when you do, you will experience one of the greatest horror films ever made.
This film has an impressive run time of 2 hours and 7 minutes, and throughout the film you are constantly on edge about what may happen next to this family.
Hereditary isn’t the usual, hollywood ghost movie that you see every so often, it is something different, it’s from a director with a vision and a passion for his films, and we need more of those. Each scene crafted beautifully and shot in unique ways that you wouldn’t normally get in the average horror film.
And with the subject of loss fresh on the family’s mind, you can see that they are dealing with internal problems as well as trying to make sense of what is happening which can lead to incredibly well acted performances from the family.
The mother Annie, played by Toni Collete gives one of the best performances I have ever seen, and that’s not to say the other family members have poor acting because they most definitely do not.
The son Peter, played by Alex Wolf, and the daughter Charlie played by Milly Shapiro, don’t have much of a connection with their mother which gives the film a feeling of isolation and loneliness which can add to the tension that you feel while watching.
The only problem I have is that we don’t get to know much about the father, Steve played by Gabriel Byrne, and I think he’s meant to be a supporting actor in the whole situation, to give a sort of structure and balance for the viewer to land on amidst the chaos.
Overall Hereditary, in my opinion, is one of the greatest horror films made in recent memory, everything done in this film was done perfectly and for that reason this film gets a 5/5.
First of all the way the movie portrays grief and loss is more chilling and painful to watch than any dramas out there. Performances are solid from the whole cast. It is a bit slow for some , but it’s not trying to be a jump scare. You can tell from the beginning that is going to be a psychological horror. It’s creepy , weird and atmospheric.
Slow, boring and silly. Acting is decent but the plot drags like a forty ton weight. If you don't believe in demons and know how seance tricks are done this movie is a snore fest. Doesn't have any of the brilliant visual storytelling of Jordan Peele, can't build tension for anything, and doesn't have any clear, overarching social or political themes of good modern horror. Just embedded misogyny and stigmatizing of female-centered religious practices. This family is messed up, also some lame cult stuff. That's the movie.
Hereditary is an immediate modern classic for the horror genre, with its brilliant visuals and score, the setups, the execution, the classic horror tricks, the movie is amazingly crafted, and I recommend it to anyone with the stomach. Hereditary has a standard horror plot but the work and detail put into it makes it stand out from the crowd, and the visuals are truly a wonder, with the subtlety of not being in your face like other horrors movies. The performances of the cast are truly shocking with the quality they deliver, with scenes that can shake you to your core and develop connections to the characters. Overall, Hereditary is a 5/5 modern horror classic.

This movie really got to me. The last 5 minutes is a bit weird but doesnt take away from the Amazing performances and disturbing events.
Modern horror movie stink...they are usually plotless and filled with jump scares and fake Cgi.. this movie however I liked...it was the first time in years I actually felt scared.
đź’€ Not so much about death, as it is about the grief of the living. Eventually it steps into the supernatural, with horrifying results. Not for little kids. Toni Colette is outstanding. Don't read any more about it than this! Highly recommended by the American Mothers Horror Appreciation Society.

NeoNoir, your thoughts?
Weak characters. Plot doesn't make sense at all. Not scary but bizarre.
A very surprising horror movie about witches! Witches are scary!
This movie is a devastating masterpiece of horror. Although there is a supernatural element to the film the horror of the film is all based around a devastating family tragedy and the fragmenting of those familial relationships.
