Helen Knott, a highly accomplished Indigenous woman, seems to have it all. But in her memoir, she offers a different perspective. In My Own Moccasins is an unflinching account of addiction, intergenerational trauma, and the wounds brought on by sexual violence. It is also the story of sisterhood, the power of ceremony, the love of family, and the possibility of redemption. With gripping moments of withdrawal, times of spiritual awareness, and historical insights going back to the signing of Treaty 8 by her great-great grandfather, Chief Bigfoot, her journey exposes the legacy of colonialism, while reclaiming her spirit. 2019.

A book about the authour's addiction and issues in life and how she recovered. She illustrates the beneficial and difficult aspects of her indigenous background and how her recoveery was positively effected .Not only did she recover and went on to lead a productive life reconcile with her family, she also went on to use her poetry skills to positively influence others. An excellent book that can help non indigenous readers understand the issues that influenced the developments in Canadian history that negatively affected the indigenous people.

Helen Knott has written an honest, raw and astonishingly courageous memoir about her life in addiction and recovery; abuse and healing. The writing is pure and poignant and very stirring emotionally. Incredibly well done.
