"Mma Ramotswe happily reconnects with an old friend when his teaching job brings him back to Gaborone. In the course of their conversations, though, Mma Ramotswe learns that Hope, one of their mutual acquaintances, has fallen on hard times. This initially comes as a shock to her, as the woman came from wealth. But when she learns that Hope has recently separated from her husband, a local politician with a less than stellar reputation, she becomes determined to find out the truth. Elsewhere, Charlie and Fanwell are also involved in tricky matters of the heart, as Queenie-Queenie, Charlie's girlfriend, seems to have transferred her affections to Fanwell. It's up to Mma Makutsi to set things right, but she may be too distracted by Violet Sephotho, who has somehow been appointed to the board of a charity. What is Violet up to now? As all of these mysteries are unravelled, Mma Ramotswe and the entire No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency will be reminded of the value of tried and true wisdom--never judge a book by its cover."-- Provided by publisher.

Always calming and kindly amusing. Thank you, AM.

Yet another charming installment in the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. Mma Ramotswe helps out an old friend and something momentous happens to Charlie. The characters remain just as vivid and endearing as they did in the first book.

This is the first book of this series that I have read and it left me disappointed. McCall Smith’s « The No.1 Detective Agency«  series is a popular one but but this is certainly not his best. The humour in it is good and the main characters are endearing but the story drags on. My husband has read most of the books in the series and also says this is not the best. I just hope the up-coming “How to raise an elephant” will be good.

I have read all the books in the series and more and more I have found each one to be more repetitive. This was the worst by far.

All the warmth of character, and heart of a more relaxed and human lifestyle that we have come to expect from McCall Smith's vision of the old Botswana, land of contented cattle.

I love the relaxed pace and gentle characters of the Number One Ladies Detective Agency series.

Need a little relaxation? Some stress relief? Spend some time with the wonderful Mma Ramotswe and her friends. McCall Smith provides insight into the human condition, gentle humor, and a great deal of wisdom. Take a deep breath...

I always love the story telling style of Alexander McCall Smith. This Number 1 Ladies' Detective Agency book did not have much of a mystery. I always listen to these books because I love the Botswana accent of the narrator. Still highly recommend the series. Kristi & Abby Tabby

This is another winning addition to the series, with all the usual characters. Charlie has a fiancee, Mme Ramotswe solves a few cases all at once, and it all ends well. I enjoy these so much.

As with all good story tellers, McCall Smith takes various threads and weaves them into a picture. Not everyone is going to be thrilled with the solutions to their problems; but Mma Potokwane takes a hand in one thread of the story, Mma Makutsi resolves another, and Charlie will be starting a whole new thread. Overall Mma Precious Ramotswa keeps everyone working on their own particular piece of the picture while she copes with a new development in her life. Not only do the problems in this book come to a conclusion; but the lives of the people in the series set up new themes. Over all the wisdom of McCall Smith through Mma Ramotswa grounds the reader in a kinder, gentler way of life.
