An unexpected weeknight meal with a neighbor or a weekend dinner party with fifteen of your closest friends--either way and everywhere in between, having people over is supposed to be fun, not stressful. This abundant collection of all-new recipes--heavy on the easy-to-execute vegetables and versatile grains, paying lots of close attention to crunchy, salty snacks, and with love for all the meats--is for gatherings big and small, any day of the week. Alison Roman will give you the food your people want (think DIY martini bar, platters of tomatoes, pots of coconut-braised chicken and chickpeas, pans of lemony turmeric tea cake) plus the tips, sass, and confidence to pull it all off. With Nothing Fancy, any night of the week is worth celebrating.

Author of bestselling Dining In and social media star Alison Roman brings us a cookbook about having people over, not entertaining. She gives the reader some unfussy foods along with permission to stop worrying about perfection. While some of the recipes are more complicated than others it is worth checking out.

This book is the equivalent of clickbait. Make no mistake. It is fancy. There are even recipes with the word Fancy in the title. Examples are, Fancy citrusy Olives and Smashed Eggs and Fancy Fish on Crackers. Then there are fancy ingredients. Swordfish, urfa chile, guanciale, preserved lemons, trout or salmon roe, yusu kosho, homemade aioli, etc, etc. The list drones on. I also couldn't stand the stories in between recipes, or the descriptions and info that accompanied the recipes. They were sometimes so annoying that I could feel my blood pressure skyrocket while I was reading them. Were there recipes that I liked? Yes! However the entire book REEKS of someone who is extremely pretentious and is desperately trying to convince people that they are not.

Not in MY kitchen.

I didn't think any cookbook could be worthy of the hype that surrounded Nothing Fancy, but this cookbook was excellent. Nothing Fancy single-handedly kicked me out of my cooking funk. Every recipe I tried (and in a three week span I tried a LOT) was easy to make but with a depth and complexity of flavours that ensure these recipes are dinner party-worthy. Highly recommended.

Alison Roman's long awaited follow up to Dining In is finally here! I've already made the lasagna, red onion focaccia, and I followed her advice (not necessarily a recipe) for the best baked potatoes of all time. Everything has been wonderful. I cannot recommend her cookbooks enough.
