In the late 1980s, in Soviet-era Ukraine, a bureaucratic glitch omits an apartment building from municipal records. Officially, 1933 Ivansk Street does not exist - and nor do its inhabitants. So begins Maria Reva's entwined stories about the fascinating, inventive people who live in the doomed building. Connecting the narratives is an unforgettable, chameleon-like girl named Zaya: an orphan for whom the mysterious building becomes an unlikely refuge.

Interlinked short stories of life in the USSR before and after the fall, each one bitingly sharp and inky-dark in its humour.

A glimpse of the absurdities, challenges and cruelties of pre and post "Communism" in Ukraine, when no bureaucracy/society cares for others. Ultimately the human spirit finds a way, but its a heart-breaking read.

I read 1/2 way through but could not make it to the 'funny' part. It is a series of short stories with no connection after 100 pages. The stories are catastrophes brought about by bureaucratic bungling and man's inhumanity to man (and children) when the culture is built on scarcity and mindless social control. I did not have the heart to skip to the end; it was just too depressing to read during this Covidian pandemic.

Need a vacation? Head to Moscow with Maria Reva. This is a great book to take you out of the United States frame of mind. The short stories meld together to form a fascinating story of other people's lives through great changes. There are laughable, cringe-able, scary, and sweet moments peppered throughout this book. I recommend it for anyone tired of formula fiction and ready for an adventure.
