"A spellbinding story of a mother with nothing left to lose who sets out on an all-consuming quest for justice after her daughter is murdered on the town playground. Sometimes the answers are worse than the questions. Sometimes it's better not to know. Set in the poorest part of the Missouri Ozarks, in a small-town with big secrets, The Familiar Dark opens with a murder in the town's playground. Eve Taggert, desperate with grief over losing her daughter, takes it upon herself to find out the truth about what happened. Eve is no stranger to the dark side of life, having been raised by a hard-edged mother whose lessons Eve tried not to pass on to her own daughter. But Eve may need her mother's cruel brand of strength if she's going to face the truth about her daughter's death and about her own true nature. Her quest for justice takes her from the dark underbelly of town, to the woods, and most frighteningly, back to her mother's trailer, for a final lesson. The Familiar Dark is a story about the bonds of family--women doing the best they can for their daughters in dire circumstances--as well as a story about how even the darkest and most frightening of places can provide the comfort of home"--

This book is such a fast read and it’s not that long even though the topic and story line is not something easy to absorb. The story intertwine between mothers and their children in a dark way which reminds me of Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Object. However, there’s also a lot of love and sacrifices in this story. In a way, this is a story about feminism and the fight to be strong even in the worse circumstances. Truly and enjoy it and wanting to read other books from this author.

I loved this dark and gritty thriller! I literally read this in one day racing to see what happened and then was sad that I read it too fast. There are parts of this book that are so emotional and really hit home with me. I was in tears at several points throughout this book. This book digs deep into family relationships and the fierce love that mothers have for their children. I loved this quote from the book, "Truth is, there's no good way to navigate being female in this world." I highly recommend this book! I will definitely be on the lookout for more books by this (local!) author.

I couldn't put this book down! It's not the mother/daughter story you would expect. I always love books with the gritty Ozark setting, and this novel is indeed riveting. Trigger warning that the content matter may not be for everyone, especially parents. Amy Engel is definitely one to watch, and I for one will be eager to read whatever she comes up with next.
