In the summer of his seventeenth year, Samuel Sooleymon gets the chance of a lifetime: a trip to the United States with his South Sudanese teammates to play in a showcase basketball tournament. He has never been away from home, nor has he ever been on an airplane. The opportunity to be scouted by dozens of college coaches is a dream come true. During the tournament, Samuel receives devastating news from home: A civil war is raging across South Sudan, and rebel troops have ransacked his village. His father is dead, his sister is missing, and his mother and two younger brothers are in a refugee camp. Samuel desperately wants to go home, but it's just not possible. Partly out of sympathy, the coach of North Carolina Central offers him a scholarship. Samuel moves to Durham, enrolls in classes, joins the team, and prepares to sit out his freshman season. But Samuel has something no other player has: a fierce determination to succeed so he can bring his family to America. He works tirelessly on his game, and soon he's dominating everyone in practice. With the Central team losing and suffering injury after injury, Sooley, as he is nicknamed, is called off the bench. And the legend begins.

3 words. Boring, boring, boring

This was awful. It starts out slow and around pg 300 Grisham just mails it in and hits the fast forward button. A seemingly bad basketball player who goes to college as a pity case magically becomes the best player overnight. Grisham makes his lack of research obvious by missing simple details liken a)not knowing what year March Madness expanded to 64 teams, b) what types of teams play in the “first four” and c) that a 4 seed and a 10 seed can’t play in the first round. That he couldn’t get these simple facts right and that the editors didn’t care to correct them makes it obvious this was just a bad attempt at a quick pay day.

Very depressing book. Not the usual John Grisham book.

Grisham needs to stick to lawyer/crime novels. Unfortunately I got to page 50, bored with the slow-moving story line.

Good read for round ball and sports enthusiasts. Disappointed with Sooley's
END as I expected him to continue onward and upward in his quest... He had the motivation to succeed with family, etc., and blew it! Why praise him?

John Grisham tells a story well, with a terse style that keeps the action constant. But I don't like how his style worked in this book. It largely didn't. I kept turning the pages, but was disappointed in the end. The story seemed manipulated rather than real.

Wonderful read, Had me rooting for the main character all the way. Very entertaining.

If you think of John Grisham only as a writer of legal thrillers think again. His "Bleachers," Playing for Pizza," "Calico Joe" and now Sooley are excellent Sports novels. Sooley is about a passionate Basketball player, a young lad from civil war torn South Sudan. He gets a chance of a lifetime when he is selected to play on a team in the US. This leads to a College scholarship. Dare we dream of the NBA? Will he be able to bring his family over to America? You won't be disappointed by this book.

Fun read. Grisham can get some things wrong. But in this tale - he gets a lot of things right. While this is not necessarily a book I would reccomend to my book group, I would encourage high school/college athletes to read it. Parts are motivational, part is a cautionary tale.
