"What happens when best friends with nothing in common come together, fall apart, and fall in love? The Vacationers meets When Harry Met Sally..., from the author of Beach Read When Poppy met Alex, there was no spark, no chemistry, and no reason to thinkthey'd ever talk again. Alex is quiet, studious, and destined for a future in academia. Poppy is a wild child who only came to U of Chicago to escape small-town life. But after sharing a ride home for the summer, the two form a surprising friendship. After all, who better to confide in than someone you could never, ever date? Over the years, Alex and Poppy's lives take them in different directions, but every summer the two find their way back to each other for a magical weeklong vacation. Until one trip goes awry, and in the fallout, they lose touch. Now, two years later, Poppy's in a rut. Her dream job, her relationships, her life--none of it is making her happy. In fact, the last time she remembers feeling truly happy was on that final, ill-fated SummerTrip. The answer to all her problems is obvious: She needs one last vacation to win back her best friend. As a hilariously disastrous week unfolds and tensions rise, Poppy and Alex are forced to confront what drove them apart--and decide what they're willing to risk for the chance to be together"--

Overall, I really enjoyed this book! It was a light-hearted read that still had a deeper lesson, and showed a great relationship develop from friendship. My biggest issue was that it jumped in and out of present time, which made it hard to stay fully engaged with the story.

Wow. I don’t understand the extreme hype on this book. The first one, Beach Read, was fantastic, but this? I barely got past the prologue. Emily Henry knows how to right well, and I happen to like the friends to lovers, but there didn’t seem to be any real emotion to the story. It was just a bunch of words strung together. Plus, Poppy seemed to fit more of an 80 year old lady criteria than a twenty something. This book was a flop. Definitely flatter than a pancake that has been over cooked.

This was such a sweet opposites-attract romance, with the added bonus of a lot of travel scenes - perfect pandemic reading. The friends-to-lovers trope, with all the back and forth about not wanting to ruin their friendship, isn't something that always works for me - either I don't buy the romance, or I don't buy the risk to their friendship, but in this novel it made sense.

If you want to take your mind off real life 'People We Meet on Vacation' is for you. It is a prototypical 'beach read', that is, you can laze around reading, drift off and come back to the book. You may even lose your place and it won't really matter.

The story, of course, has been done: best pals, star crossed lovers, but it's done fairly well. However I found 'People We Meet on Vacation' dragged on and on toward the middle of the book. The flash backs were too many and too often not adding much of anything to the history of the main characters.

I found little in common with Poppy but I liked her. Alex was described perfectly: "As boring as the library where we met." Ouch, but accurate.

Poppy and Alex are best friends and polar opposites. She's a carefree travel writer living in New York, and he's a straight-and-narrow teacher still living in their hometown in Ohio. Every summer they've taken a vacation together, until one mishap on a trip results in them losing contact. That is, until two summers later, when an opportunity arises for them to reunite by taking one more trip together. Will they fall right back into the groove of their friendship? Will new feelings emerge, or will the awkwardness of past events pull them even further apart?
This is a fantastic book for fans of contemporary romance novels! I love the witty banter between characters, and as someone who doesn't travel much, I found myself living vicariously through Poppy Wright!

note to self, read YOUR OWN reviews before choosing a book. i rated beach read as 2.5 rounded up. people we meet on vacation is going to be 2.25 stars rated down for me, a far cry from the many 4- and 5-star reviews.

to me, poppy is another example of a clumsily rendered intentionally quirky character who manages to capture the undying love of a handsome, kind, and altogether wonderful man. the dialogue is eye rollingly implausible. this was a 'slow burn' that was like lighting a long, long fuse that fizzles out before reaching a bundle of acme TNT.

I’ve fallen hard for Emily Henry’s writing. It started with inhaling Beach Read like it was air to loving People We Meet on Vacation even more... is that possible? From the get go I was hooked. Poppy and Alex are just so bizarrely relatable even though they both live lives I can’t comprehend (I mean someone who gets up before the sun to run? No thanks 😂). This book is the perfect devour-able summer read. Great characters, great writing, a great love story.

Oh my goodness, this has been one of my favorite rom-coms I’ve read in a while. It may be the friends to lovers trope that I loved or the fact that I personally related to both of the main characters. In People We Meet on Vacation, we meet Poppy and Alex the best of friends, but also complete opposites. Most of the year they spend apart living their respective lives, but each summer they take a trip together. Through reliving each of their summer trips, we learn more and more about this duo until it’s undeniable that they should be together. Well, that is until two summers ago when things went awry, and they haven’t spoken since. This book has been advertised as “perfect for lovers of When Harry Met Sally.” I think what I enjoyed the most about this book is the deep dive we get of Poppy and Alex’s friendship. I felt as if seeing and understanding all the interworkings of their friendship helped me to fall in love with each of them individually so easily. If you need something light that will take you back to your pre-pandemic traveling days, definitely nab this one!
