Excellent book should be read by those wishing to understand Russia.
By illustrating the mental life cycle of the soldier and familly shows how all society is like a pond that must ultimately absorb the ripples created by those chucked into war. In this way a timeless book that should be read by leaders involved with military.
Worth checking the author's recent interview in Le Monde Weekend 7 Nov 15.
Also Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago is in the same vein and critical to understanding Eastern Europe today. Consider it required reading.
Also Kadare's General of the Dead Army would be a good fiction to follow reading this book.
