A lot of scans of notebooks and old photos make this an interesting read for fans of Prince. It really helps humanize and makes you understand the person behind the music.

These are some of Prince's actual words as part of his notes to Dan Piepenbring whom he had chosen in November 2015 to assist him in Writing his Memoir. Unfortunately, very little was accomplished other than a few pages of notes and conversations between him & Dan before his untimely transition in April 2016. This is a minuscule glimpse at a Musical Genius and I'm sure if the time had been given this would have been a riveting & revelatory access into his Mind, Life, and Creative Process. What was accomplished with this book is an amalgamation of Prince's scribbled song lyrics for some songs like, 'Little Red Corvette,' and '1999.' The notes from which the above quote comes, Family photos, as well as promo photos and early personal ones discovered in his vault. The initial handwritten treatment for 'Purple Rain', which gave me some insight into the origins of that story & album, which holds a significant teenage memory for me. I had purchased the album after hearing 'When Doves Cry', which precipitated my seeing the movie and attending the concert in Toronto, which was my first and the most epic, as Prince climbed up on top of one of the gigantic speakers at Maple Leaf Gardens and delivered a breathtakingly extraordinary guitar solo! So from a nostalgic perspective, this is entertaining; however, if you're looking for more depth and flavor, this is not the book for you.

When Prince died in 2016, we lost one of the most creative, unpredictable, and influential musicians of our time (or any time). This is, sadly, an unfinished memoir, that's a kind of scrapbook, full of photos and with some introductory notes by his co-writer. This is what it sounds like when doves cry.

All the photos, including photos of his hand-written songs, their captions, and the essays that go with them are the best parts of the book. If you are a Prince fan, you should enjoy this book.

"Sometimes when my father wasn't playing piano he'd say something 2 my mother & she would wink at me. She never told me what it meant and sometimes it would b accompanied by a gentle caress of her hand 2 my face. But eye am quite sure now this is the birth of my physical imagination. An entire world of secrets & intrigue, puzzles 2 solve & good ol' fashioned make-believe. A place where everything 4 a change goes ur way. One could get used 2 this. Many artists fall down the rabbit holes of their own imaginations & never return. There have been many who decry this as self-destruction, but eye prefer the term FREE WILL. Life is better lived. What path one takes is what sets us apart from the rest. Those considered "different" R the ones most interesting 2 us."
