This 564-page biography covers Winston Churchill's life from his unusual parents (before his birth) up to his demotion from First Lord of the Admiralty in the second year of the Great War. This even-handed account of the life and ambitions of this towering figure of the 20th century would have benefited from editing for brevity (as it provides thorough endnotes to the prodigious sources). The text is enhanced by some black and white photographs, maps of the Dardanelles, and an index. It lacks a bibliography.

"... Violet Asquith (daughter of a future Prime Minister), finding herself next to [Churchill] at dinner that summer [1907], thought that here was a man famous for putting the cat among the pigeons. Seemingly sunk in abstraction, Churchill suddenly asked her how old she was. Nineteen, she said. "And I," he said with despair in his voice, "am thirty-two already. Younger than anyone else who counts, though. Curse ruthless time! Curse our mortality. How cruelly short is the allotted span for all we must cram into it! ... We are all worms. But I do believe that I am a glowworm." (p. 199)
