Excellent detective stories require great villains. Secret Prey has a great sociopath embedded in a rather complex plot. Although the plot line involving business practices wasn't my favorite, in retrospect it provided important backgrounds for most the cast. Buckle your seatbelt and brace yourself for a frantic conclusion. I tip my hat to Sandford.
" He was tired, but then he needed to be more tired. He needed to be so tired that when he got home, he could lie down and sleep before the churning began. He put a tape in the tape player, zz top, the GREATEST HITS album, and turned it up. Interference. Can't churn when there's too much interference. Terance Robles had made just shy of a half million dollars, the previous year, and he'd spent only a small part of it. With his access to information, he could grow his take at 20 to 30% per year, on top of earnings. If he could hang on for another five years, he could quit, get out. Buy an old used Cray computer somewhere, and do some SERIOUS shit, but he had to hold on."
Lucas Davenport #9. A CEO is killed in a hunting accident with four of his executives on the scene and plenty of reasons to want him dead. Davenport has a feeling it isn't going to be as simple as finding a single killer.
I really like a cop who is independently wealthy, doesn't have to worry about the rules very much and can get away with shacking up with a fellow detective. Only one problem, how could he have ever become a deputy chief in the first place given his track record-oh wait he saves the taxpayers bags of money by blowing the bad guys away. In this crime scene he definitely should have shot the crazy lady a bit higher and saved society the expense of supporting her any further..
another excellent "Prey" story
I'd like to be able to access this via my kindle paperwhite.
I think so far of all the books by Sandford that I have read, this is the best one. The plot is great, lots of twists and a believable villain. The Lucas Davenport character surrounded by the supporting cast strikes again
