The distribution and abundance of herring on the west coast of VancouverIsland have been investigated by offshore cruises since 1969. In September andOctober 1984, an offshore cruise was conducted off southwest Vancouver Islandto assess the distribution, abundance, and relative cohort strength ofPacific herring, a cruise initiated because of concern about the decline ofherring stocks on the south coast of British Columbia. Twenty-one tows weremade to estimate species composition, with sufficient herring forrepresentative samples found in 13 tows. Age compositions, average lengthand weight, and Hjort maturities are summarized, although catch rates couldnot be used as an index of abundance.
