Evaluation of the utility of instream indexing for estimating coho escapements in a small river system for which there were independent estimates of escapement from fence counts and mark-recapture surveys.Survey designs using simple random sampling, spawning ground sampling, and 'index area' sampling, with unit sizes of 100, 200, and 400 m, and peak live counts, peak live plus accumulated dead counts, total dead counts, and area-under-the-curve methods of estimation, were compared using visual count data obtained by foot surveys. The counting efficiencies of different observers, and an examination of the relation between visual estimates of coho density and densities obtained by electrofishing were also done.
