A major power project is being considered for the Stikine River, which flows through Northwestern British Columbia and crosses the international boundary into the Alaskan Panhandle before discharging into the Pacific Ocean. This study describes seasonal and spatial variability in sediment and water chemistry in the Stikine River Basin and ascertains seasonal differences in river discharge and spatial differences in bedrock geology and their influence on sediment and water chemistry. A suspended sediment budget was calculated for the 1982 hydrological year and studies of lotic biological communities were also included.
