A review of heritage legislation, policy and programs in British Columbia based on a consultation process of 388 submissions from a variety of organizations and individuals. Submissions contained discussions of the following subjects: Native heritage, archaeology, palaeontology, natural heritage, heritage landscapes, heritage trails, industrial heritage, maritime heritage, multiculturalism, archives, museums, historic sites, heritage tourism, education, compensation, legislation, roles of government, privately owned heritage resources, incentives for heritage conservation, British Columbia heritage trust, heritage conservation branch, organizational delivery, and special site issues. Investigates heritage conservation, its rationale, scope and principles of development, including conceptual and special issues. This discussion provides a background to understanding how the province and the public can cooperate on leadership policies for stewardship, through education and from the support of various government and private non-profit entities. Includes a discussion of the role of various levels of government in achieving leadership and makes recommendations.
