Studies on the Reproductive Biology of Pacific Cod and English Sole in Hectate Strait From the Cruise of the FR/V W.E. Ricker, November 25-29, 1986Microform - 1987
Report on the first in a series of cruises to investigate aspects of the reproductive biology of Pacific cod and English sole, important components of the multispecies trawl fishery in Hecate Strait, British Columbia. The program documents spawning timing and location, the rate of oocyte development, whether spawning time depends on size of fish, water temperature, or stock density, the differences, if any, in response between the Hecate Strait stock and the LaPerouse stock, and fecundity. The investigation of maturation cycle was carried out through histological preparations and ovary weighing. Fecundity was investigated by freeing oocytes from ovarian tissue and counting subsamples. A report is presented on length-frequency distributions, percentage mature ogives, length-weight data, and ovary weight-fish data.
