Report on the relationships of salal density, foliar productivity, biomass, cover, and height to forest stand characteristics, testing for differences in the relationships among sites; the relationship of the transmission of global, direct, diffuse, and diffuse photosynthetically active solar radiation to forest stand characteristics; evaluation of the extent to which salal abundance growth and shoot size are related to transmission of solar radiation; and a discussion of the forest and wildlife management implications of the findings. Emphasis is on forestry practices in untended, immature standings in the Coastal Western Hemlock Zone on Vancouver Island.
