Artificial circulation has become an important management technique in B.C. for improving over-winter trout survival in interior winterkill lakes and providing adequate summer refugia in eutrophic coastal lakes. Most of the easily accessible lakes are now being circulated and future projects will require considerable expenditures of capital and labour. This paper documents the historical development of artificial circulation in B.C.; reviews the individual projects and examines common problem areas; provides a benefit-cost analysis on a sub-sample of 10 lakes; and provides recommendations on future research and application of artificial circulation.
