Protection of Aquatic and Riparian Habitat on Private Land, Evaluating the Effectiveness of Covenants in the City of Surrey, 1995
Reports a project that systematically evaluated, through site and resident surveys, the viability of covenants under Section 215 of the Land Title Act to protect the fish habitat of six streams in Surrey and Maple Ridge, British Columbia. Begins with background on land use, fish habitat, riparian areas, and the use of covenants to protect environmentally sensitive areas. Also discusses covenant compliance, including location of covenants in relation to top of riverbank; illustrates examples of encroachments; and presents results of field and resident surveys that evaluate the effectiveness of the covenants in protecting fish habitat. Concludes with recommendations for improving protection of fish habitat in urban areas.
