I grew up with Cinderellis and the Glass Hill but never delved into the other Princess Tale Novellas. This book didn't disappoint. This is a silly fairytale with the same tone you'd expect from a Gail Carson Levine book. If you're looking for a really quick read, I'd highly recommend it.

A fun twist on an old fairytale.

I liked this book, at first -- it's beautiful presentation ( fluent English, right-on illustrations and elegant typeface), and it's hilarious twist on Cinderella.

But, for me, the joke went on too long and got tedious. I was relieved -- and resumed liking the book -- in Ch10, when Ethelinda's patience finally snapped.

But poor Rosella.... Let's rewrite the ending for her.

For ages 6-8. A fairy rewards one twin sister for good behavior and punishes the other for bad. What happens when it turns out that the punishment is better than the reward?

In this short, amusing tale it is the fairy that learns her lesson. The book is easy to read and hard to put down (not a problem at only 87 pages). As often happens in fairy tales, gifts and punishments sometimes backfire. In this tale not only do two girls learn to use the fairy’s gifts, the fairy herself sees the consequences of her actions and develops some self-control.

In The Fairy's Mistake, two very different sisters have two very different encounters with the fairy Ethelinda. Rosella is kind and helpful. Her reward: Jewels and gems tumble out of her mouth whenever she speaks. Myrtle is rude and spiteful. Her punishment: Bugs and vipers slither out of her mouth. The fairy Ethelinda feels she's meted out justice just right--until she discovers Rosella has been locked up by a greedy prince and Myrtle is having the time of her life!
