In 1997, the Fraser River was nominated to the Canadian Heritage Rivers System (CHRS) in recognition of its outstanding natural and cultural heritage values and recreational opportunities. To achieve designation as a Canadian Heritage River, a management plan must be prepared. This document presents a strategy for management of the river to meet the objectives of the CHRS. It begins with a review of the features and heritage values of the river, then sets out the strategy's vision, guiding principles, and goals and objectives. Part 4 outlines the implementation of the strategy, including the role of the Fraser Basin Council and management tools to be used (such as legislation, guidelines, and land use planning processes, and governmental and non-governmental programs and initiatives). The final section lists key factors in a successful implementation of the strategy.
