"When former police detective Ted Conkaffey was wrongly accused of abducting Claire Bingley, he hoped the Queensland rain forest town of Crimson Lake would be a good place to disappear. But nowhere is safe from Claire's devastated father. Dale Bingley has a brutal revenge plan all worked out -- and if Ted doesn't help find the real abductor, he'll be its first casualty. Meanwhile, in a dark roadside hovel called the Barking Frog Inn, the bodies of two young bartenders lie on the beer-sodden floor. It's Detective Inspector Pip Sweeney's first homicide investigation -- complicated by the arrival of private detective Amanda Pharrell to "assist" on the case. Amanda's conviction for murder a decade ago has left her with some odd behavioral traits, top-to-toe tats -- and a keen eye for killers. For Ted and Amanda, the hunt for the truth will draw them into a violent dance with evil. Redemption is certainly in the cards -- but it may well cost them their lives" --

How I love this series! I. Love. This. Series. I love how Ted and Amanda accept each other’s quirks. Ted’s complete acceptance of Amanda, exactly as she is, forms the basis of a strong connection between the two, and has become a friendship that they both depend on in equal measure. I laughed at Ted's description of Amanda: that while she can be "brilliant in the throes of a case," she is also "as annoying as a poke in the eye in equal measure". That's Amanda in a nutshell!! I loved Ted's conversion of a child's playhouse into a house for his geese! Ted and his geese never fail to make me smile. I have to admit that early on I was fairly certain who had killed the two young bartenders. I found myself talking to the book, saying "Look there Why aren't you looking there??? Ha! You know what? I couldn't have cared less that I had pretty much had it figured out. I'm fascinated by these characters, no matter what the circumstance. I absolutely cannot wait to read Gone by Midnight!!

Best book of 2019! Absolutely riveting! There's some heavy stuff going on in this series, but with a cast of quirky characters it doesn't get too dark. The writing is excellent, with a steady pace. Ted has been found guilty (in the court of public opinion), for a heinous crime against a child. Except for a smattering of people who believe in his innocence, he is vilified wherever he goes. So engrossing, I was anxious for Ted to be vindicated, and could not stop reading. Although you don't have to read the first book, Crimson Lake, why wouldn't you, it's fantastic too! I re-read Crimson Lake and did a back to back binge-fest and loved every second. Flawless!

Loved this sequel, especially having read the first novel Crimson Lake. Looking forward to this strange couples next adventure.
