The Camera My Mother Gave Me takes us through Susanna Kaysen's often comic, sometimes surreal encounters with all kinds of doctors - internists, gynecologists, "alternative health" experts - as well as with her boyfriend and her friends, when suddenly, inexplicably, "something went wrong" with her vagina.

& Taylor

The author relates her odyssey through the world of gynecological medicine in an attempt to diagnose a mysterious disorder, and addresses larger questions that arise when sexual pleasure is replaced by pain.

Quick and easy day-read, it kept me entertained and I found it hard to put down once I got started. Had a few good chuckles.

I WAS SO HAPPY TO SEE THERE IS A BOOK WRITTEN BY A WOMAN WHO HAS EXPERIENCED THE TERRIBLY INCAPACITATING AND PAINFUL GENITAL CONDITION CALLED
"VULVODYNIA". LITERALLY, IT IS PAIN IN THE VULVA AND IT MAKES ANY PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE.
I AM STRUGGLING WITH THIS DISEASE MYSELF FOR ALMOST TWO YEARS AND I FIND IF I HAD CANCER IN THE AREA I WOULD BE GETTING MORE MEDICAL CARE THAN I AM.
BEING A WOMAN SUCKS!!

This book is about so much more than a sick vagina. It's a portrait of an abusive relationship, a depiction of the helplessness of the medical field faced with something it doesn't understand and the helplessness of the patient faced with the medical runaround, and primarily (to me) an ode to the importance of having a strong network of friends you can rely on when facing any problem.

I grabbed this book because I had one day decided to read some novels that had spun great movies. So I grabbed this one with 'Girl Interrupted' By Susanna Kaysen. Considering its an entire story about her 'sick' vagina, I'd have to say it was enjoyable enough. Both her books were very quick and easy reads. She keeps the book flowing and as a woman, I was honestly interested in WHAT WAS WRONG with her downstairs haha, if not terrified.

Susanna Kaysen is impeccably talented at giving an intimate glimpse into her life, without sounding fake or forced. This book proves that even more than Girl, Interrupted.
