Presents proceedings of an international workshop whose main goal was to develop a realistic strategy to rehabilitate depleted northern abalone (Haliotis kamtschatkana) stocks in British Columbia. The workshop was also meant to clarify the roles, expectations, and shared interests of many of the interest groups in the province, emphasizing the key role in the rebuilding plan of local communities, including First Nations. Presentations are arranged in sections covering First Nation & aquaculture industry perspectives, the current status of abalone fisheries, experiences in rebuilding abalone stocks, and additional pieces of the rebuilding puzzle such as genetic tools, infectious diseases, effects of predation, and the relevance of marine protected areas. The final section summarizes the rebuilding strategy developed at the workshop.
