This paper comments on these declines, lists & discusses potential explanations for the declines, and discusses the efficacy of potential mitigation efforts, particularly as they apply to habitat restoration and bycatch reduction. The paper begins with a brief review of the growing awareness of the eulachon decline. This is followed by information on eulachon biology, including taxonomy, distribution, reproduction, life history, stock structure, and assessment methods. A separate section discusses factors that may affect eulachon abundance such as climate change, habitat deterioration, and fishery mortality. Implications of precautionary management are briefly discussed, especially with respect to uncertainty about stock structure. Concluding sections describe the probable prognosis for eulachons and recommendations for species listing relative to endangered wildlife criteria.
