Offered in 0 more formatsThis paper describes a method for defining two effective, simple, stock-specific biological reference points for steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and other territorial, stream-rearing salmonids whose stock/recruitment relationship approximates a Beverton-Holt model. The method assumes that there is an upper limit to smolt production that is determined by the amount & quality of freshwater spawning & rearing habitat, and that the maximum smolt recruitment is predictable in principle from habitat characteristics. The paper compares the performance of several biological reference points as thresholds in single- & dual-threshold harvest control rules, using an age-structured population model based on Keogh River (British Columbia) steelhead that incorporates realistic levels of process error & implementation error.
