This publication is a learning resource designed to help teachers & students from grades 5 to 7 examine the daily acts of protection in homes & schools, as well as the role that communities & governments play when dealing with issues surrounding the use of land & resources. The objective of the learning resource is to explore the concepts, values, & practices that underlie the idea of protected areas such as parks & ecological reserves. Activities are presented in five sections covering the following broad topics: what protection means; why protect; how to decide what to protect; caring for protected areas; and protection in action. Each activity includes a summary, learning outcomes, key concepts, & terms, a list of materials needed & time required, background notes, instructions, questions for discussion, and connections to other activities. Student handout sheets are also provided.
